Cynthia Gamble
Cynthia Gamble, a noted authority on Marcel Proust, John Ruskin, and the Belle Époque, is vice-chairman of the Ruskin Society, and Visiting Fellow at The Ruskin Library & Research Centre at the University of Lancaster, and a Companion of the Guild of St George.
She is the author of, among many other works, Proust as Interpreter of Ruskin: The Seven Lamps of Translation. She contributed a chapter, «22, rue de Provence: Siegfried Bing's Hub of Art Nouveau Creativity and its rayonnement in the World of Marcel Proust» to the book Proust au seuil de la modernité: Proust, Literature and the Arts. She is one of the contributors to the Dictionnaire Marcel Proust and the author of John Ruskin, Henry James and the Shropshire Lads. She received her Ph.D. from the University of London.
Cynthia's passion for Proust began when she was a student at the University of London. She loves being a Proust detective and was the first person to uncover the truth about who really translated La Bible d'Amiens and Sésame et les lys, as revealed in her book, Proust as Interpreter of Ruskin: The Seven Lamps of Translation. She enjoys working in an Anglo-French framework. Her most recent book, L'œil de Ruskin: l'exemple de la Bourgogne, co-authored with her French colleague, Matthieu Pinette, contains a chapter on Proust.
